UG Oasis Community Garden - now on MYSPACE!

UG Oasis Community was started in the spring of 2004 on a weed and trash strewn lot next to The Urban Gardener's store. In the spring of 2005 the garden doubled in size when the dilapidated house next door was razed to make room for more garden space. In this our 3rd growing season we have 20 gardeners growing vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit.

Organic for Life

We use organic methods exclusively in our garden. We have worked hard to build up the soil food web that is essential to the growth of healthy nutritious vegetables. We have been fortunate to have had 15 cubic yards of Mr. Natural Complete Landscape Mix and 30 cubic yards of Erth Food Compost donated to the garden. These organic composts are are teeming with soil microorganisms that work to build soil structure, and turn organic matter such as mulch or cover crops and crop residues into food for the plants. The improvement in the soil is evidenced by the presence of multitudes of earthworms where there previously were none.

We are now regularly treating the garden with actively -aerated compost tea to exponentially expand the amounts of microbes in the soil. Soon we will be brewing compost tea in the garden which we will make available to other community gardens and individual gardeners for a nominal fee.

We practice "Bugscaping" to attract and keep beneficial insects in the garden. Also we have noticed that we now have many kinds of birds that do their parts by eating insects. ( Some of them like tomatoes too but we'll gladly trade a tomato or two for their hard work on bug patrol).

Other experiments we are carrying out include Paramagnetic Energy Collection and Worm Farming. Next we are going to inoculate tree stumps with mushroom spawn to see if we can grow a crop of edible oyster mushrooms. Coming soon we will be building a Cob Oven and starting "Film Night at the Oasis" powered by our new solar photovoltaic electricity generator. Check this page regularly for updated on these events.

Come Visit
Visitors are always welcome at UG Oasis so come on by and see what's growing. Since this is a community supported venture we always welcome donations or volunteer help during work days at the garden. If you'd like to make a donation or join us to work in the garden please see Kate or Robin next door at the Urban Gardener.
